Before we jump into exactly how she did this, I want to make it clear that this was not a quick, drastic, or overnight change. This took our client a couple of years to achieve. But she has been able to easily maintain this weight loss without having to follow rigid rules.
For starters, she decided that she was just going to do it and didn’t look back. She decided that she was going to love herself and love her body after years of working against it and feeling at war with it.
Before you are tempted to skip past what I just said…I want you to go back and read it again, because if you are reading this then it is likely that you have felt this same way to some extent, and have most likely normalized disliking yourself. But you can’t truly prioritize yourself if you are stuck thinking about yourself in a negative way. You can’t hate yourself into changing! She made it a point to start loving herself and communicated to her body that it was safe. Not only did she reassure her body that it was safe, but she also took it a step further and promised her body that she was actually going to care for it – rather than doing the opposite for over a decade with dieting and negative thoughts.
At MM we like to say that 80% of weight loss is mindset…again, don’t be tempted to skip this.
The next powerful thing that she decided was that she was going to throw everything out the window that hadn’t worked for her in the past. If it hadn’t already worked then she wasn’t going to waste her time trying it again or holding onto it. This included tracking her food, cutting calories, and torturing herself with the scale. She was done with shortcuts, quick fixes, and finding band-aids that only temporarily made her feel better but contributed to a bigger problem down the road.
This one is a biggie – She took the timeline out of her goal. She didn’t have an end goal in sight. She didn’t care about getting to a certain point in 3,6, or 12+ months. Her journey was going to be just that – a journey, and one that she was prepared to be on for as long as it took…because the alternative was quitting, and that wasn’t an option. Taking the timeline out of her goals took the pressure off of her to achieve unrealistic expectations by a certain time.
It’s a simple answer…and really it might be so simple that you don’t want to believe it. She was consistent with basic things – she focused on protein, healthy fat and fiber, “PHFF” and walking. Aside from that, she was active in our M3 continuation program. Each month, she focused on the pillar that was the topic of focus and slowly incorporated ways to build momentum and go just a little bit deeper with her habits. She kept it simple and she made sure that it felt good to her. You may be reading this and feeling like this isn’t enough for you because you have too much that needs to change but, this is where I want you to challenge your own self-limiting beliefs – because this type of thinking is not serving you.
She didn’t give up when she hit a plateau. This is an important takeaway because plateaus are very normal with substantial weight loss. She maintained motivation by defaulting to her “why” and reminding herself that she not only trusted the process but also trusted herself. This was made easier by understanding the science behind how her body works and what her body needs to function optimally and feel its best. She also surrounded herself with a community that understood her journey (shoutout to our M3 community!) and decided rather than throwing in the towel she was going to lean in harder.
She decided that she wasn’t going to look at her body as the enemy anymore and that she was going to fiercely love herself because she was worth it. Once she decided this, she set out to educate herself on how her body actually worked and what it needed to thrive – once she had this, she focused on baby steps and just kept going.
You may be thinking that this sounds too good to be true. But, the truth is…we spend so much of our lives doubting ourselves and being too afraid to trust ourselves with our own bodies. We would rather hold onto quick fixes and soul-sucking dieting habits because the only thing scarier than dieting is to not.
Here at Metabolism Makeover, we make it our mission to equip you with the tools to finally ditch dieting and empower yourself to confidently make food choices. Regardless of whether you have 100 pounds to lose or if you just want the freedom to finally trust yourself with your nutrition choices, we are here to help!
