Yes, you read that right. When most people start a major weight loss journey, they typically come to terms with the idea that they aren’t going to be able to have any “fun.” They basically write off all life events that will take them off track. This type of mindset will only lead to burnout…and for good reason! Fun life events make up half of our lives. Weekends, vacations, girls’ nights, date nights, kids’ birthdays, weddings, work potlucks, BBQs, company parties, etc….they all add up to a major portion of our lives. Think about it for a second, how many times a month does something pop up that has the possibility of making you eat “off plan”? Cutting these things out might work short term, but eventually, it’s not sustainable (or enjoyable) to avoid them.
In order to have long-term and sustainable weight loss, you have to come up with a way to confidently manage these situations. Because if not, you end up going off the rails…when your only plan is to avoid these things you are setting yourself up for failure. When you finally do allow yourself to indulge, you typically have a last supper mentality and over-do it because you tell yourself there won’t be another time, OR you just simply do not feel confident with food choices when you are out to eat or at an event that you have no control over. This is exactly why we have a whole week of Metabolism Makeover dedicated to “making room for fun.” Our client (and she isn’t the only one) is proof that having a game plan for all the fun things in life sets you up for success.
Our client was able to put together a foolproof plan with the guidelines that we provided and found a way to still have fun and enjoy your life in a sustainable goal supportive way that felt good to her. She didn’t have to avoid or restrict in order to keep working towards her weight loss goals.
So what does making room for fun actually mean? This question comes up a lot, and to be honest, it looks different for everyone. This is exactly why it isn’t your fault if you have failed at cookie-cutter plans in the past. You need to find a plan that is tailored to your own individualized needs that works for YOU.
This is exactly what we helped this client do. We helped her establish a plan for all the things that typically stump people when they are trying to lose weight – dining out, dessert, alcohol, consistency on vacation, all of it!
When I say we established a plan, this doesn’t mean that we told her to avoid all the things that I just listed above. Instead, we taught her how her body works and helped to develop a strategic plan that ensured she would be able to stick with her fat loss goals while participating in all the events in your life. When it comes to major weight loss it is not about willpower…it’s about building consistent habits that feel good to you. Anyone can do something hard for 30 or even 60 days. This is why you may have seen some sort of results from programs in the past with strict guidelines. But, eventually, you deal with burnout. This is (just one) of my issues with programs like Whole 30 and 75 Hard….the idea behind it is cool, but it doesn’t actually induce behavior change or tell you how to navigate real-life situations. Instead, it’s a challenge that most people (rightfully so) drop once the challenge is over. But here, we are going past 30 and 75 days. We are creating something that you can stick with 1, 2, 5, and 10+ years from now, and not because you have to, but because you want to!
