Bone broth – yes, please.
But wtf is it, even?
Bone broth is… broth. Just upgraded. Way upgraded.
Bone broth is made by throwing animal bones (typically chicken or beef) into a stockpot of boiling water and letting it simmer all day. It’s SO important to buy grass-fed (if using beef bones), organic bones to make bone broth, because alllllll the goodness from these bones are going to seep into the simmering water.
The collagen, gelatin, amino acids, healthy fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals from these bones seep into the broth, giving it a rich, delicious flavor and a whole lot of health benefits.
(Don’t worry – you can totally buy bone broth without all the homemade business – stay with me!)
While I love bone broth year-round, this is SUCH a good time to be talking about it with both soup AND cold/flu season coming up!
You Need Bone Broth for Cold & Flu Season
The amino acids in bone broth – like arginine, glutamine, and cysteine – have been shown to boost immunity.
COMMON COLD KILLER
Why do we LOVE chicken soup when we’re sick? Because the broth, when it’s made from REAL healthy animal bones, can actually clear mucus and open respiratory pathways.
The amino acids in bone broth reduce inflammation, and L-glutamine specifically reduces gut inflammation. This is another reason why bone broth is such an effective cold-killer. When we’re sick, our bodies are in a state of inflammation.
KEEPS US HYDRATED
Hydration is so important when keeping a healthy immune system! Bone broth contains electrolytes (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium), making it an even better hydrator than water (and wayyyy more healthy than Gatorade!).
HEALTHY GUT = HEALTHY BODY
Guys, gut health is hot. And for good reason. Researchers now believe that at least 70% of our immune system is located in our gut. I talked allllll about how important gut health is in this post, but it’s especially important during cold and flu season.
The gelatin and collagen in bone broth is so healing to your gut lining as it acts a “sealer”. If you have a lot of inflammation in the gut, you’re at risk of causing permeability so collagen is super important!
Any benefits you get from collagen peptides – which are all the rage right now (do people still say all the rage?) – like better hair, skin, nails, joints, and digestion, you’ll also get from bone broth. Win-win-win-win-win.
An Easy Button for Bone Broth
Does making homemade bone broth sound dramatic? It is.
Don’t let the crunchy moms tell you it’s easy. First of all, you have to GET IN YOUR CAR and drive to the store to buy good, organic, grass-fed bones. Then, you have to put them in a big pot and add vegetables and seasonings and water. Then, you have to simmer it all day. THEN YOU HAVE TO STRAIN IT.
Perfect Supplements makes a 100% Organic Chicken Bone Broth POWDER. That’s right. It’s like bouillon. For bone broth. And no chemicals. Just. Bone. Broth.
I really can’t think of a reason why you shouldn’t buy this immediately. Unless you wanna make your own bone broth. In which case, I really do commend you and I really wish I had your motivation and drive.
